Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, defended the UN’s role during her address on Tuesday, stressing that humanitarian law itself is not to blame for civilian deaths in Gaza. 

“It is not the Charter which fails. It’s not the UN as an institution which fails,” she said, adding that the Charter is only as strong as the willingness of member states to uphold it and hold violators accountable. Acknowledging global failures, Baerbock said the world would be “much worse” without the United Nations, asking delegates to imagine whether “a single person would be better off without it.”
