Mass stabbing in UK: Four injured in near Manchester synagogue; suspect shot by police

Four people were injured in a vehicle ramming and stabbing outside a synagogue in north Manchester on Thursday, before police shot the suspected attacker.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers were called shortly after 9.30 am to the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall after a witness reported a car being driven at pedestrians and a man being stabbed. Armed officers responded and shot the alleged offender minutes later.

“There are currently four members of the public with injuries caused by both the vehicle and stab wounds,” GMP said in a statement posted on X.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, calling it “horrific.” “I’m appalled by the attack at a synagogue in Crumpsall. The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific,” he said in a statement. “My thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services and all the first responders.”

Reuters reported a heavy police presence, with ambulance crews wearing protective body armour and helmets. At least one injured person was seen being taken into an ambulance.

The North West Ambulance Service declared a major incident, saying resources had been dispatched and staff were working closely with other emergency services.

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, described it as a “serious incident” but urged calm. “The immediate danger appears to be over, and Greater Manchester Police have dealt with it very quickly,” he told BBC radio, advising the public to avoid the area.

Police have not released details about the suspect’s identity or motive. Investigations are ongoing.
