Arbitrary double standards: China ‘not afraid to fight’ after Trump slaps 100% tariffs, vows counter-measures

China has accused the United States of pursuing “arbitrary double standards” after President Donald Trump imposed 100% tariffs on a range of Chinese imports, further escalating tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

In a sharply worded statement, China’s Commerce Ministry said the US decision marked a “classic case of double standards” and accused Washington of ignoring China’s goodwill while taking “erroneous and harmful” actions that undermine prospects for stable trade relations.

“Since the US–China economic and trade talks in Madrid, the US has repeatedly expanded restrictions against China, adding multiple Chinese entities to its export control and sanctions lists,” the ministry said. “It has arbitrarily widened the scope of regulated enterprises through so-called ‘penetration rules’, affecting thousands of Chinese companies.”

The ministry said that Washington’s continued implementation of Section 301 measures targeting China’s maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding industries had “severely harmed China’s interests” and eroded the atmosphere for constructive dialogue.

“Threatening to impose high tariffs at every turn is not the right way to engage with China,” it said, adding, “China’s position on tariff wars has been consistent: we do not want to fight, but we are not afraid to fight.”

Beijing also condemned the US decision to impose additional port fees on Chinese vessels, saying the move had left China “no choice but to take countermeasures.”

“China’s decision to impose a special port fee on US-related vessels is a necessary defensive action,” the ministry said, urging Washington to “promptly correct its erroneous practices” and work towards maintaining “stable, healthy, and sustainable” economic and trade ties.

China warned that if the US persists in its current course, it “will resolutely take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”
