Magnitude 6.2 quake strikes off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, no tsunami threat reported

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck offshore of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on Wednesday, the country’s geophysics agency (BMKG) said.

Officials confirmed there was no tsunami potential following the quake.

The tremor was recorded off the island’s northern coast, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Last week, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Banda Sea near Indonesia’s Maluku Islands. The quake occurred at a depth of about 137 kilometers, and Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said there was no tsunami threat.

The Banda Sea region sits at the junction of several tectonic plates, including the Australian and Sunda plates. Their interaction has fractured the Earth’s crust into smaller plates and microplates—such as the Banda Sea, Timor, Molucca Sea, and Bird’s Head plates, creating one of the most complex geological environments on the planet.

Indonesia, situated on the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” regularly experiences earthquakes because of the region’s complex network of tectonic plates.

Earlier on Monday, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif, killing at least 20 people, injuring hundreds, and damaging the city’s historic Blue Mosque, officials said.
