Bangladesh on Edge: Death Sentence for Former PM Sheikh Hasina Sparks Protests, Nationwide Shutdown.

An uneasy calm prevails in Bangladesh following a death sentence handed to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal. Hasina, in exile in India since August 2024, was found guilty of crimes against humanity for her role in a deadly crackdown on student protests in July 2024. The verdict has led to violent clashes, resulting in at least two deaths, and prompted her Awami League party to call for a nationwide shutdown. Dhaka has formally requested New Delhi to extradite Hasina under their bilateral treaty. From exile, Sheikh Hasina called the judgment ‘rigged by an unelected Yunus-led government, denying that she had been given a fair chance to defend herself’.
