Bodega cats: NYC’s cute but illegal icons

Bodega cats: NYC’s cute but illegal icons

Tucked between bags of crisps and cartons of milk, New York City’s bodega cats reign supreme. These charming felines aren’t just lounging around—they’re unofficial shopkeepers, pest controllers, and beloved local celebrities. From Harlem to Brooklyn, you’ll find cats curled up on counters or weaving through shelves, keeping rats at bay while winning hearts.

But these whiskered workers live in a legal grey zone. State law prohibits live animals in food-selling establishments, putting shop owners at risk of fines. Still, most would rather face penalties than deal with rodents the old-fashioned way.

Despite the risks, bodega cats are adored. Their presence fosters a sense of community, often becoming a reason for repeat visits. Online, they’ve become icons—flooding Instagram feeds and news stories alike, symbolising NYC’s grit, charm, and cheeky attitude.

Now, advocacy groups are pushing for legal protections and proper care standards. A proposed certification could ensure bodega cats are spayed, safe, and hygienically managed—allowing them to stay legally and healthily.

So, are bodega cats heroes or health hazards? NYC can’t seem to let go of its furry shopkeepers. And maybe it never should.
