Mexican Navy ship with 200 onboard hits New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, 19 injured

A Mexican Navy ship — with 277 onboard — crashed into New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening, leaving at least 19 injured, including four in critical condition, New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a press briefing. All injuries were reported from the ship while the cause of the accident is not yet clear, according to reports.

In a video that has gone viral, the exact moment leading up to the crash is captured. The footage shows several onlookers standing at the harbour watching the ship Cuauhtemoc, decked with lights and carrying mostly cadets, before two of its 147-foot masts crashed into the bridge.

At the time of impact, around 8:26 pm local time, several sailors in white who were on top of the boat started falling off, while a few desperately held on to the mast, according to reports.

The onlookers were also seen running away as the ship approached towards the bank.

The New York Fire Department stated that rescue operations are currently underway.

The Cuauhtemoc is a Mexican Navy training ship. It was slated to visit 22 ports across 15 countries. The incident occurred as the cadet training vessel was leaving New York Harbour.
