Donald Trump extends Diwali greeting to Americans amid tariff war with India: Light’s win over darkness

United States President Donald Trump extended his greetings on Monday to Americans celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights, and described the celebrations as a reminder of light’s win over evil. In a post on X, the Republican leader also called the celebrations a time to come together with family and friends.

“Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali — the Festival of Lights. For many Americans, Diwali is a timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness,” Trump said in a statement published on the White House official website.

“It is also a time to bring families and friends together to celebrate community, draw strength from hope, and embrace a lasting spirit of renewal. As millions of citizens light diyas and lanterns, we rejoice in the eternal truth that good will always triumph over evil. To every American celebrating Diwali, may this observance bring abiding serenity, prosperity, hope, and peace,” the statement added.

India and Indians across the globe celebrated Diwali on Monday with prayers, family gatherings, and the lighting of lamps, symbolising the triumph of good and the inner light within.

Diwali in the United States has grown steadily over the past few years, primarily through Indian and Hindu diaspora communities. Celebrations typically include lighting diyas, sharing sweets, performing prayers, and hosting cultural events. Cities such as New York, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco hold large public events featuring music, dance, and fireworks.

Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and California mark the day as a state holiday, and schools in multiple US cities have begun giving students a holiday to celebrate Diwali.
