Donald Trump revokes Joe Biden’s security clearance, which allows former president to review classified files

US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he is revoking the security clearance of former President Joe Biden and ending his access to classified information.

“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He said his administration would revoke Biden’s security clearance and daily intelligence briefings. “Joe, you’re fired,” he wrote.

Former presidents traditionally receive some intelligence briefings after leaving office.

Trump said he was following the same action Biden took against him.

“Biden set this precedent in 2021, when he instructed the Intelligence Community to stop the 45th President of the United States — me — from accessing details on national security, a courtesy provided to former presidents,” Trump wrote.

He said Biden “could not be trusted with sensitive information,” referring to a Justice Department inquiry that described Biden’s memory as poor.

Biden, who left office last month, has not responded.

In 2021, shortly after taking office, Biden told CBS he did not believe Trump should have access to such briefings due to his “erratic behaviour”, citing concerns he might share information.

“What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?” Biden said at the time.
