Explosion rocks Harvard Medical School building in Boston, authorities call it ‘intentional’

An explosion early Saturday morning rocked a Harvard Medical School building in Boston, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

The blast occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on the fourth floor of the Goldenson Building on the university’s Longwood Campus, according to The Harvard Crimson. Two individuals were seen fleeing the scene at the time of the explosion, the Harvard University Police Department said.

A campus officer attempted to stop them but was unsuccessful before entering the building to respond to the alarm, The Boston Globe reported.

The Boston Fire Department later determined the explosion was ‘intentional’. A sweep of the building found no additional devices, officials said.

Authorities are investigating the incident and have not released details about the suspects or the nature of the device.

Boston police and firefighters swept the building for any additional devices but found none. The FBI has joined the investigation and is assisting Harvard University Police, FBI Boston Division spokesperson Kristen Setera told CNN.

“The Harvard University Police Department is actively investigating this incident in coordination with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners,” the department said in a statement.
