Trump says ceasefire, Tehran says not true

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has denied US President Donald Trump’s claim that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between Iran and Israel. In a statement issued hours after Trump’s announcement, Araghchi made it clear that no such deal was reached.

“As Iran has repeatedly made clear: Israel launched war on Iran, not the other way around,” Araghchi wrote on X. “As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations.”

Trump had earlier claimed that Iran and Israel had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire,” which would come into effect within six hours, after both sides completed their “final missions.” He added that the war would officially be considered over 24 hours after the initial ceasefire began.

However, Iranian officials pushed back. Araghchi stated that Iran has no intention of continuing its military actions — only if Israeli forces end what he called “illegal aggression against the Iranian people” by 4 AM Tehran time.

“Provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards,” Araghchi added. “The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later.”

Meanwhile, two leading Iranian news outlets — Tehran Times and Mehr News Agency — also openly refuted Trump’s statement, calling it a lie.

The Tehran Times published a headline stating, “Iran has not agreed to a ceasefire. Trump is lying again.” The article accused Trump of using false announcements to sow confusion within Iran and to pressure the leadership into de-escalation in unfavourable terms.

Meanwhile, the Mehr News Agency ran a scathing headline: “Liar Trump speaks of ceasefire between Iran, Israeli regime.” The outlet pointed out that Israeli forces are currently attacking Iran, contradicting any claims of de-escalation.

Amid the ceasefire announcement, a drone struck a location within Iraq’s Taji military base, situated north of Baghdad, according to a military source cited by the Iraqi state news agency.
