US President Donald Trump said he was “good at solving wars,” saying he did not seek a Nobel Prize for his peace efforts as he turned his attention to the escalating conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, en route to the Middle East, Trump repeated his long-standing claim that tariff threats helped avert war between India and Pakistan, insisting that his diplomacy was aimed at saving lives, not winning awards.
Trump also said the Gaza war had ended, calling the Israel-Hamas ceasefire the “eighth war” resolved during his presidency. He added that his visit to Israel and Egypt — his first since brokering the truce — would focus on consolidating the ceasefire, advancing reconstruction efforts in Gaza, and building on the fragile momentum toward regional peace.
TRUMP SAYS HE ‘SOLVED EIGHT WARS’
The US president boasted about his record in mediating conflicts, saying his administration had resolved multiple global disputes.
“This will be my eighth war that I have solved,” Trump said. “And I hear there is a war now going on between Pakistan and Afghanistan. I said, I’ll have to wait till I get back. I am doing another one. Because I am good at solving wars.”
His remarks came as tensions flared along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, with heavy overnight clashes reported. Afghan officials said 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed in retaliatory operations, while Pakistan’s army confirmed 23 casualties, according to the Associated Press.
Trump also flagged previous conflicts he claimed to have helped solve. “Think about India and Pakistan, think about some of the wars that were going on for years,” he said. “We had one going for 31, one for 32, one for 37 years, with millions of people being killed in every country, and I got every one of those done, for the most part, within a day. It’s pretty good.”

The president said his peace initiatives had saved “millions of lives”, adding, “It’s an honour to do it. I saved millions of lives. In all fairness to the Nobel Committee, it was for 2024, but there are those who say you could make an exception because a lot of things happened in 2025 that are done and complete and great. But I did not do this for the Nobel. I did this for saving lives.”
Trump said that economic pressure, not diplomacy, helped him prevent war between India and Pakistan.
“I settled a few of the wars just based on tariffs,” he said. “For example, between India and Pakistan, I said, if you guys want to fight a war and you have nuclear weapons, I am going to put big tariffs on you both — 100 per cent, 150 per cent, 200 per cent. I said I am putting tariffs, and I had that thing settled in 24 hours. If I didn’t have tariffs, you could have never settled that war.”
TRUMP HEADS TO MIDDLE-EAST
Trump’s Middle East visit aims to reinforce the fragile ceasefire and oversee progress in the hostage exchange between Israel and Hamas.
He said hostages held by Hamas could be released sooner than expected and anticipated their return to be completed “on Monday or Tuesday.” The framework includes the release of 20 living hostages, the return of the remains of others, and the freeing of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, alongside a partial troop pullout from Gaza’s main cities.
“The war is over. I think people are tired of it,” Trump said.
Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that Trump is also expected to meet freed hostages and their families during his visit.
Trump will first visit Jerusalem, where he will address Israel’s parliament, the Knesset — an honour last extended to President George W Bush in 2008.
He will then travel to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to co-chair a peace summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The summit, attended by more than 20 world leaders, aims to finalise the ceasefire framework, outline Gaza’s reconstruction, and promote regional normalisation.
Trump said he believes there is a “narrow window” to reshape the Middle East and heal divisions between Israel and its Arab neighbours. “This is the time to build something lasting,” he said before departing Washington.
The ceasefire, now in its fourth day, marks the first phase of Trump’s proposed peace framework, designed to bring a permanent end to the Gaza conflict and establish a new governing structure for the region.
