Indiana teen charged with murder after YouTube rap video references shooting

A 19-year-old Indiana teenager has been charged with murder after allegedly posting a rap video on YouTube that referenced the killing of a 20-year-old man. The suspect, Cameron Kizer Jr., was formally charged this week following the July 25, 2024, shooting of Jathen Maxwell in Fort Wayne.

According to court documents cited by local outlets WANE and 21 Alive News, Kizer made several social media posts shortly after Maxwell’s death. One message reportedly included the chilling word “headshot,” hinting at the nature of the crime.

The most alarming post, however, was a YouTube rap video in which Kizer allegedly referenced retaliatory violence. A line from the song cited in the affidavit reads:

“I gotta finish the beef they started. You get a low on bro then call me.”

Authorities believe this was a direct reference to the shooting.

Prior Threats and Social Media Messages

The investigation also revealed that Kizer had allegedly been threatening Maxwell through social media in the days leading up to the incident. One witness told investigators that the teen had been making hostile posts and even sent direct messages expressing his intent to harm Maxwell.

Court documents further state that Kizer had a confrontation with Maxwell just days before the fatal shooting. In addition, Kizer is said to have messaged two individuals on Instagram, openly stating his desire to kill Maxwell.

Remembering the Victim

Loved ones of Jathen Maxwell paid tribute to him online, remembering him as a beloved son, brother, and friend. The tragic loss has shaken the local community, who are now grappling with the shocking details of how social media played a role in both the motive and the evidence trail.

As of now, Kizer remains in custody. Investigators are continuing to examine the teen’s online activity and any potential accomplices or additional evidence related to the case.
