Indonesia school blast: Massive explosion inside mosque in Jakarta during Friday prayers, 54 injured

At least 54 people, including children and teachers, were injured after an explosion ripped through a mosque inside a school complex in Indonesian capital Jakarta during Friday prayers, news agency Reuters quoted police as saying. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blast.

The blasts occurred around 12.30 pm inside the mosque, which is located within a Navy compound in the Kelapa Gading area of North Jakarta, prompting a large emergency response.

Police and ambulances surrounded the site as worshippers were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri said the injured suffered burns and other wounds, some of them serious. Speaking at a televised press conference, he confirmed that officials were examining what triggered the explosion.

Local broadcasters aired images of the mosque showing limited structural damage, though the prayer area was cordoned off by police for forensic examination.
