Jimmy Kimmel Live returns after suspension with monologue on Trump, Charlie Kirk

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel returned to TV after a week-long suspension to rapturous applause and in a lengthy monologue, replete with puns and sarcasm, spoke on the shooting of Trump aide Charlie Kirk and Trump himself.

Full of emotion, a teary-eyed Kimmel said Trump “tried his best” to cancel him and asserted that he wasn’t trying to joke about the killing of Kirk – remarks on whom engulfed his show into controversy.

However, before his 20-minute monologue, the ABC star walked out on stage to a hero’s welcome and several minutes of applause. “It was ear damaging to be honest,” an attendee, Kevin Winhard, told CNN.

In his opening remarks, Kimmel went directly to the point that had courted a controversy – the shooting of Kirk, a right-wing activist.

“I have no illusions about changing anyone’s mind, but I do want to make something clear, because it’s important to me as a human and that is, you understand that it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” Kimmel said.

Kirk, who helped Trump build support among young voters ahead of the presidential election, was shot dead while he was addressing a gathering at Utah Valley University.

Kimmel angered a section of conservatives after he asserted on his show that Trump loyalists were “doing everything they can” to score political points from the tragedy. He also alleged that Kirk’s killer might have been a MAGA Republican.

Following an uproar from Republicans, ABC suspended Kimmel’s show “indefinitely” last week. However, it was forced to allow Jimmy Kimmel Live! to resume production after backlash from Hollywood stars, media hosts and even Republicans such as Ted Cruz.
