Russia strikes Kyiv and other cities with drones and missiles overnight

Russia carried out a large-scale aerial assault on Ukrainian cities overnight between September 6 and 7, using hundreds of attack drones and several missiles, according to officials. The attacks struck multiple residential buildings in Kyiv.

Explosions were reported in cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Zaporizhzhia, as a prolonged drone strike unfolded. Around 4 a.m. local time, Ukraine’s Air Force issued a warning that missiles had also been launched towards the country.

As per a report by Kyiv Independent, Kyiv officials first activated air defences around 11:30 p.m. local time. Journalists from the Kyiv Independent later heard explosions in the capital around 3:30 a.m.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko stated that debris from Russian drones hit three multi-story residential buildings in the Sviatoshynskyi district and another in the Darnytskyi district, causing fires at those sites.

Klitschko also reported that several cars caught fire in the area as a result of the attack.

As of now, no casualties have been reported, and the full extent of the damage remains unknown.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces hit a workshop building in the city’s industrial zone, according to regional Governor Ivan Federov. He confirmed that no casualties occurred in that strike.

Ukraine’s Air Force warned that drone formations were targeting nearly every region in the country. The exact number of drones launched in the latest assault is not yet confirmed, but Russia is known to launch more than 500 drones in large-scale operations.

During a previous major attack on the night of August 30, Russia launched 537 Shahed-type drones and decoy drones along with 37 missiles. That strike mainly targeted Zaporizhzhia, killing one person and injuring 34 others.
