Supreme Court win on tariffs would make US richest country, says Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that a Supreme Court victory in the legal battle over his sweeping global tariffs would transform America into “by far the richest country anywhere in the world,” while giving Washington “tremendous power to negotiate.”
“If we win the Supreme Court case, which is the finalisation of tariffs, we will be by far the richest country anywhere in the world We’ll have tremendous power to negotiate. By using tariffs, I settled seven wars. Four of them were because I was able to do tariffs,” Trump told reporters before departing for a trip to the United Kingdom.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments in November on whether Trump exceeded his authority by imposing tariffs on imports from China, India and other countries. Lower courts found his administration acted illegally, ruling that Congress — not the president — has constitutional authority over tariffs.
Small businesses and states that challenged the measures say the tariffs nearly bankrupted them. “Congress, not the President alone, has the power to impose tariffs,” said attorney Jeffrey Schwab of the Liberty Justice Center, which is leading the legal challenge.
Two lower courts struck down the tariffs, but a divided appeals court allowed them to remain in effect. Trump’s administration has urged the justices to move quickly, arguing that removing them now would put the U.S. “on the brink of economic catastrophe.”
Trump has long defended tariffs as both an economic shield and a foreign policy weapon. The case, set for November, will be one of the most consequential trade rulings in decades.
