Board Game 2045: New board game explores Taiwan conflict scenario

A new board game, 2045, is being developed by Mizo Games, set against the backdrop of a hypothetical armed conflict between China and Taiwan. The game aims to simulate potential scenarios leading up to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, offering players an immersive experience.

The developers highlighted three reasons for choosing this theme.

First, the game reflects the current tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the Western Pacific. Second, its 20-year future timeline provides a creative yet realistic view of potential geopolitical developments. Lastly, it portrays the conflict from a Taiwanese perspective, enabling players to explore the challenges faced by the island’s population.

Players navigate the challenges of war through action cards and role-playing characters such as members of Taiwan’s armed forces, Chinese sleeper agents, pro-China politicians, and ordinary citizens defending their homeland. The gameplay is set ten days before a hypothetical Chinese invasion, providing a dramatic and tense narrative.

Mizo Games successfully crowdfunded the project in August, raising over Taiwan $4 million ($121,966) in just two-and-a-half months. The game is set to launch in the U.S. and Europe, aligning with Taiwan’s increased preparations for potential conflict.

Recent years have seen a rise in China’s military threats, including naval deployments and daily military activities near Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory. Taiwan, in turn, has stepped up its defenses, recently conducting its first tabletop exercise at the Presidential Office to simulate military escalations with China.

2045 promises to provide a unique perspective on one of the world’s most significant flashpoints while sparking broader conversations on geopolitics and conflict resolution.
