Trump-Putin Alaska summit: Trump says no immediate sanctions on Russia in Fox interview
In what is being seen as a relief for India, US President Donald Trump said he was not immediately considering secondary sanctions on Russia and its trade partners. However, Trump asserted that he might have to reconsider it in “2-3 weeks”.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump softened his stance on Russia after talks with President Putin over the Ukraine war, saying the Alaska summit “went well”, rating it a “10/10”.
“I may have to think about it (sanctions) in two or three weeks or something, but we don’t have to think about that immediately,” the US President, who had just days ago adopted an aggressive tone against Russia, said.
“If I did secondary sanctions now, that would be devastating for them,” Trump further said.
Just days before the Alaska summit, Trump warned Russia of “very severe consequences” if Putin did not agree to a peace deal to end the Ukraine war, which is now in its fourth year.
Despite the rhetoric, Trump and Putin left Alaska without reaching an agreement for a ceasefire in Ukraine after an almost three-hour meeting.
