US asks G7 to punish India, China with tariffs for buying Russian oil
The United States is asking the G7 to punish India and China with tariffs for purchasing oil from Russia. US Treasury’s Scott Besant said penalties on nations having energy trade with Moscow are necessary, stating, “Cutting off Russian revenue will end the war.” This move is described as “double speak,” contrasting with Donald Trump’s statements about positive relations with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The G7 has responded that it will explore options to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The call for penalties comes even as European Union countries are also significant importers of Russian oil and gas. Meanwhile, India’s merchandise trade with the G7 nations, including the US and European countries, has grown to approximately $248 billion.
