One killed, four injured in shooting and stabbing attack in Israel’s Haifa
One person was killed and four others were wounded in a stabbing attack on Monday in the northern Israeli city of Haifa. Israeli authorities said an assailant was also killed in the incident, which they described as a suspected terror attack that took place in a busy bus station.
According to the Times of Israel, two terrorists carried out the attack–one of them opened fire while the second one stabbed the passersby. It was not immediately clear who killed one of the attackers, whose identity was not immediately known.
Doctors “have pronounced the death of a man around 70 years old and are providing medical treatment to and evacuating four injured individuals”, Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service said.
Among the injured included a man and woman around 30 years of age as well as a 15-year-old boy. The condition of the boy is said to be critical.
This was the first fatal attack in Israel since the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas took effect in the Gaza Strip on January 19. It also came as negotiations between the two sides stalled following the conclusion of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire over the weekend.
This is the second suspected terror attack in the Haifa region. On February 27, a vehicle rammed into pedestrians at a bus stop in Haifa’s Pardes Hanna-Karkur area, and the Israeli police are investigating the incident as a possible terror attack.
